How to declutter one space at a time
I recently spent the morning putting my money where my mouth is and decluttering my own closet. Instead of trying to tackle the entire house, I chose one contained space and decided to finish it before moving on.
I kept the clothes I genuinely wear, the pieces that fit me now and the items that work with the rest of my wardrobe. Not the clothes that used to fit or the things I keep telling myself I might wear again someday. Everything else went into one of three categories: donate, sell or throw away.
That one closet reminded me how much lighter a space can feel when it contains only the things that still work for your life.
Decluttering equals less stress
Decluttering is not only something to do when you are preparing to sell your home. It can make your everyday life feel calmer, help your home function better and make it easier to find and enjoy the things you actually use.
If a move is somewhere in your future, starting early can save you a tremendous amount of time and frustration. Every item you let go of now is one less thing to pack, move and unpack later.
My family moved four times in five years, so I have spent more time than I care to remember packing boxes, sorting belongings and deciding what deserved to come with us. I learned that the worst time to make those decisions is when a moving truck is coming and you are surrounded by half-packed boxes.
Start with one space
Trying to declutter your entire home at once can quickly become overwhelming. Choose one closet, drawer, cabinet or shelf and complete it before moving on.
Take everything out so you can see exactly what you own. Then ask yourself:
- Do I use it regularly?
- Does it fit my life now?
- Would I buy it again today?
- Do I have a proper place for it?
Try not to keep something because of guilt, because it was expensive or because you think you might need it someday.
Make four simple decisions
Give every item a clear destination:
- Keep what you use, love and have room for.
- Donate anything useful that someone else could enjoy.
- Sell items that have enough value to justify the time and effort.
- Throw away anything broken, stained, expired or unsuitable to pass along.
Once you have made those decisions, follow through. Put the donations in your car, list the sale items and take out the trash. Otherwise, your sorting piles can quickly become a new form of clutter.
Keep it manageable
Decluttering does not need to take over your entire weekend. Set aside 20 or 30 minutes and choose something you can realistically complete during that time.
Small wins build momentum. One finished drawer makes the next cabinet feel possible. One organized closet can inspire you to take on the bedroom. Before long, your home begins to feel lighter and easier to manage.
Keep an empty donation bag somewhere convenient. When you find something you no longer need, place it in the bag. Once it is full, donate it and start again.
Whether you are preparing to move, thinking about selling or simply wanting to shed some of the things you have collected over the years, start small and keep going.
Every cleared space is progress.
